Day 17. Glencoe to Fort William. 18 Miles.

855 Miles / 1376 km

Finally a lazy morning! I didnt get out of bed till 9.30 this morning. and checked out bang at check out time of 10am. The weather was looking good today and I knew the 18 miles I had today wouldn’t be too bad. I was actually looking forward to ride alongside Loch Linnhe.

So Glencoe… There’s plenty of fun facts about this little gem of a place!

  • Glencoe derives from the Gaelic name ‘Glen of weeping’
  • The ‘Beurkle’ Mountain is one of the most photographed and recognised spots in Scotland – Yup I took a photo – not knowing this 😉 It is one of the best known and loved Munro’s in Scotland!
  • The glen is a U-shaped valley, formed by a glacier in the last ice age, 10 000 years ago.
  • The Massacre of Glencoe took place here in 1692 – following the Jacobite uprising. (Some fascinating and interesting history lays in this story if you’re read up on it! – also if you’re a fan of ‘Outlander’)
  • Glencoe is a Glen with volcanic origins.
  • The Mountains run from Aonach Eagach Ridge in the North to Buachaille Etive Beag in the South.

So the 18 mile ride from Glencoe to Fort William – the base of the UK’s Highest peak – BEN NEVIS.

Most of the ride was smooth and flat and on a nice cycle path. After crossing the Spean Bridge I was cycling alongside the Loch Linnhe!
I didnt grab a single peak at Nevis on the ride, I think it’s pretty well hidden behind some other mountains and its pretty far over to the east! I think a trip to Glen Nevis visitors centre is in need today to go check out the trail and weather conditions for tomorrow!

Here are some pictures from today. I made it to Fort William by lunch time, so plenty of time to meander around town, stock up on some snacks and plan my hike for tomorrow!

Grateful for an easy day today and a relaxing afternoon!! 🙂
I’m gonna need all the good luck and good karma for tomorrow. Send it my way please!

The forecast for tomorrow is looking okay…..
